The performance of many Path of Exile items can be improved by upgrading their performance. They can be a fantastic source of damage, more AD or even more attaches.

Often times however upgraded Common and Magic gear is often surpassed by Rare-grade equipment due to their requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They improve the effectiveness of the Best item upgrade they are connected to. Armor upgrades are available in the world of games and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Additionally, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade components within them by using an expert or greater salvage kit.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it is able to take on. Upgrading a piece of armor to its highest upgrade level will boost its ability to absorb damage. However, it's important to keep in mind that this will increase its weight, which will cause it to be heavier than before.

There are a variety of armor upgrade available in the game. Each has a different effect. For instance, certain upgrades will give the armor a certain number of health points while others will make it lighter and stronger. The name of the upgrade items will indicate the kind of upgrade that an item upgrader kit will be given, as illustrated below.

A few upgrades are magical or a combination of technology and magic, which is indicated by the "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges to use, which are identified by the "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges for these upgrades refresh daily or never expire, dependent on the upgrade.

The cheapest way to upgrade armor is to use Iron Ore, which can be found by exploring the area and looting minor loot chests. Titanium is more expensive, but can be found at the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to high level armor pieces. These upgrades can give significant improvement in stats and are a worthwhile cost, especially for single-handed weapons.

The process of upgrading an armor piece to max upgrade level will dramatically increase its defense values, but the player should be aware that increasing its weight can drastically decrease its agility and speed. It is not recommended to upgrade armor above +9. The boost in defense usually isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to enhance certain aspects of their weapon. Upgrades can increase the accuracy of a rifle or the damage that shotgun shells do. Some weapons have special upgrades to improve their inherent qualities. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and decreases the chance of the risk of overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases the speed of projectiles to cause more damage).

Most weapon upgrades require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade to apply. They can be obtained by finishing side quests, killing a certain amount of monsters or bosses or by contacting the Weapon Upgrade NPC in Central Flarine.

Upgrading a Weapon, Equipment Set piece or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade cost of a set number of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the higher the number of bars required to complete it. If you have multiple upgrade materials the cost of upgrading will be less.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the ways to upgrade your equipment and weapon sets was a bit different. Prior to Chapter 2 Season 5, you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a specific amount of Bars. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level and at that point, the upgrades would reset.

It's possible, but it depends heavily on RNG. You're better off buying gear that has low upgrade levels and high base scores and stat distributions. These gears have a greater chance of granting you the highest level of advantages and benefits.

Most players will want to prioritize upgrades to the weapons they use most frequently to allow them to progress faster. Players should also upgrade the weapons their squadmates use to boost their strength. Shepard for instance should upgrade his M92F so that he can unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more effective when used with biotic specialists such as Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to increase a stat or provide secondary effects on weapons and armor. They can be created through a process called jewelry crafting, where you combine a gemstone and a number of specific reagents at a jewelry table. The higher the tier of the gemstone has, the more powerful its secondary effect. These reagents are available from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses all over the world, or through salvaging Legendary Gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The quality of a gem can be improved by the Jeweler, with stages that range from Crude to Royal. Based on the level of the jewel it can provide different stat boosts when inserted into weapons, gear and jewelry.

The Jeweler can create all tiers of gems, with the exception of rare and legendary ones that require certain levels to gain. Jewels can be replaced by another one without damaging the original. However, you can only replace one jewel in an equipment piece once.

It is typical to use more jewels for aesthetic reasons. The jewels also improve performance and make a surface harder than steel so that repeated friction caused by pivots does not damage them.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the look of your weapons and shields. These glyphs offer a small boost and can be freely swapped, but they are not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs, like jewelry, can be upgraded at the Jeweler to exchange gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like aegis and traits, cannot be swapped out, and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can provide your hero with various small, but useful advantages. They can be obtained in the starter areas as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, and by completing road interactions. They can also be made by jewelers, and found or purchased from the Trading Post.

The first trinkets that a player unlocks will be the cloak. It grants a small, but valuable boost to movement speed and evasion. The player will then be able to acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets in a similar manner to how they acquired weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment has one upgrade item slot that can accept either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be placed in any kind of equipment while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded and is only compatible with specific types of trinkets.

These trinkets can also grant bonuses and abilities that are active even when the character is not in combat. This allows a hero to become more efficient even when not in combat. It can also make up for the lack of a good team or talent tree slots which are usually filled by the hero's optimal stats.

As a general rule trinket upgrades should be a priority BiS (Best item upgrade in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace soon. Next, any items with desirable stats that aren't as important as the iLevel of the item that is to be upgraded. This is especially true when an item has multiple stats you'd like to upgrade since it's generally better to upgrade just one important stat than two sub-optimal ones.

Jungle players will often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one prior to the start of the game. Mid and top players on the other hand they will select a green or a pink ward, based on the game's matchup. These choices will have a significant impact on the hero's map control abilities.

In addition to the items mentioned above, players will also find other trinkets in the form trophies and rewards throughout the game. These can be obtained through completing certain milestones within the story. For instance, completing the main quest for a chapter or beating an opponent. You can check them out by selecting the achievement in the reward section of the hero's menu.
